Nicolas Ruel (b. 1973, Montreal) is a visual artist whose practice center on photography as both document and transformation. Ruel’s work engages architecture, urban culture, and temporality through a refined visual language rooted in an “in-camera” double exposure technique. Drawing on Cubist aesthetics, he fuses multiple perspectives into a single image, reconfiguring the viewer’s perception of space and time.

Over the past two decades, Ruel has traveled extensively, photographing more than one hundred cities worldwide. His large-scale works are printed on stainless steel through a complex process developed in collaboration with his team. Working with materials such as pigments, bronze, and gold, Ruel transforms industrial surfaces into luminous, enduring objects that hover between photography and sculpture.

His work has been exhibited internationally in solo and group exhibitions and is held in the collections of major institutions, including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts; Museum Europäischer Kulturen, Berlin; the Brooklyn Museum; Kunsthalle Munich; Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Seoul; the Swedish Centre for Architecture and Design, Stockholm; and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris.

Ruel lives and works between Montreal and Paris.
